Bitcoin dominance

Bitcoin dominance is BTC's share of the total crypto market cap, as a percentage. It shows where money is flowing: into bitcoin or into altcoins.

How it works

The formula is simple: bitcoin market cap / total crypto market cap × 100%. If the whole market is worth $3 trillion and bitcoin $1.8 trillion, dominance is 60%. It is often watched as its own chart (ticker BTC.D on many platforms).

Rising dominance usually means bitcoin is outperforming: either money is moving into BTC or altcoins are falling faster. Falling dominance means altcoins are rising faster than bitcoin, or money is moving into stablecoins. That is why dominance is read together with BTC price and total market cap.

Note that total market cap includes stablecoins. When investors sell crypto and park in USDT or USDC, the stablecoin share grows and bitcoin dominance can move in surprising ways. Different sites calculate it differently, so figures can differ by a couple of points.

Example with numbers

The market is $2 trillion and BTC $1.1 trillion, so dominance is 55%. A month later BTC is at $1.2 trillion and the market at $2.4 trillion. Dominance falls to 50%: bitcoin rose 9%, while the rest of the market went from $0.9 to $1.2 trillion, up 33%.

Common mistake

A common mistake is reading a drop in dominance as a guaranteed start of altseason. Dominance can fall because stablecoins grow during a sell-off, not because altcoins rise. Read dominance together with prices and do not base an entry on one indicator.

Questions and answers

What is bitcoin dominance in simple terms?

It is bitcoin's share of the whole crypto market's value. 55% means more than half the money in crypto sits in BTC.

What does rising bitcoin dominance mean?

That bitcoin is doing better than the rest of the market: rising more or falling less than altcoins.

Is dominance linked to altseason?

Yes, dominance usually falls during altseasons. But falling dominance alone does not guarantee altcoins will rise.
