Pip value
Pip value is how much money a one-pip price move makes or loses for a given position size. For 1 lot of EUR/USD it is $10.
How it works
The formula is pip value = pip size × position size. For EUR/USD a pip is 0.0001 and a standard lot is 100,000 euros, giving 10 units of the pair's second currency, which is $10. For 0.1 lot it is $1, for 0.01 lot $0.10.
When the dollar is the second currency in the pair (EUR/USD, GBP/USD), the pip value in dollars is fixed. When it is not (USD/JPY, EUR/GBP), you calculate it in the second currency and convert at the current rate, so it shifts a little with price.
You need pip value to size a position from risk: decide how much you are willing to lose, then divide that amount by the stop size in pips and by the pip value for 1 lot.
USD/JPY: a pip is 0.01 and 1 lot is 100,000 dollars, so a pip is worth 1,000 yen. At a rate of 150 that is about $6.67.
Account $2,000, risk 1% = $20, stop of 25 pips on EUR/USD. Size = $20 / (25 × $10) = 0.08 lot. At that size each pip is worth $0.80 and the stop costs exactly $20.
The beginner mistake is choosing size by feel, say always 0.1 lot, regardless of the stop. Then a 10-pip stop costs $10 and an 80-pip stop costs $80, so risk jumps around from trade to trade. Size from your stop and risk amount, and for pairs without the dollar as the second currency, convert the pip value at the current rate.
Questions and answers
How much is one pip worth in forex?
For pairs with the dollar second, 1 lot gives $10 per pip, 0.1 lot $1 and 0.01 lot $0.10. For other pairs it depends on the exchange rate.
How do you calculate pip value?
Multiply the pip size (0.0001, or 0.01 for yen pairs) by the position size in units of the base currency and convert the result to your account currency.
Why do I need to know pip value?
So you know in advance what your stop costs in money and can size your position for the risk you want.
