Pump and dump

A pump and dump is market manipulation where a group quietly buys a cheap coin, inflates its price with hype, then sells to the people who bought into the excitement.

How it works

Organizers pick a coin with a small market cap and thin liquidity, where the price is easy to move. They buy in quietly, then trigger a "signal" in a Telegram channel, paid influencer posts or a wave of "next 100x" content.

Newcomers see green candles and rising volume, fear missing out and buy. That is exactly when the organizers sell them their coins at the top. Within minutes or hours buyers run out and the price drops below where it started.

In stock markets this is clearly illegal. In crypto, regulation is weaker in many countries, but market manipulation can still be punished. Either way, the people buying near the top almost always pay for the organizers' profit.

Example with numbers

A coin trades at $0.010. A group buys $50,000 worth, pushing it to $0.015, then posts a "signal". The crowd drives it to $0.040 and the organizers sell. An hour later it is $0.008. You bought $500 at $0.035 and now hold about $114.

Common mistake

The main mistake is buying a coin because it already jumped hundreds of percent in an hour and every channel is shouting about it. By then you are usually the exit liquidity for the organizers. Do not chase sudden spikes with no reason behind them, check market cap and liquidity, and never pay for "private pump signals".

Questions and answers

What is a pump and dump in simple terms?

It is when a coin's price is deliberately hyped up so insiders can sell it at a high price to trusting buyers, after which it crashes.

How do I spot a pump and dump?

A sudden surge in an obscure coin with no news, mass "buy now" calls in channels and from influencers, thin liquidity, and heavy volume only in the last few hours.

Is a pump and dump illegal in crypto?

For securities it is illegal manipulation. For crypto the rules depend on the country, but many jurisdictions also punish market manipulation.
