Virtual card
A virtual card is a payment card with no plastic: it has a number, expiry date and CVV, but lives only in an app. You use it to pay online and through your phone.
How it works
An issuer (a bank or payment service) creates the card details in an app within minutes. It runs on the same card network as a physical card, so the merchant sees no difference. You can use it on websites, for subscriptions and, if the issuer supports it, for contactless payments with your phone.
The main benefit is control. A virtual card is easy to freeze, reissue or delete, and some services offer single-use numbers that stop working after one purchase. If the number leaks, you only risk what sits on that card, not your whole salary.
Crypto cards are often issued as virtual cards first: money is taken from your crypto or fiat balance at the moment you pay. You can order plastic separately if you need ATMs or terminals without NFC.
You sign up for a $10 per month subscription and do not want to expose your main card. You create a virtual card, load $30 and set a $10 monthly limit. If the service is hacked, a thief can take at most $30, and you delete the card in two taps.
A common mistake is thinking a virtual card protects you from scammers by itself. If you type its number and CVV into a phishing site or read out an SMS code, the money goes just as it would from plastic. Keep small amounts on it, set limits, and only enter details on sites you opened yourself, not from a link in a message.
Questions and answers
What is a virtual card in simple terms?
It is a card that exists only as details in an app, without plastic. You can pay online with it and often in shops with your phone.
Can you withdraw cash with a virtual card?
Usually not directly, because ATMs expect plastic. Some ATMs accept contactless taps from a phone wallet if the card is added to it, but this depends on the ATM and the issuer.
How is a virtual card different from a regular one?
The card network and the money are the same, only the form differs. A virtual card is faster to issue and easier to delete, but you cannot insert it into a terminal or ATM.
