Breakout

A breakout is price moving beyond a key level: resistance, support or the edge of a range. It can be true or false, so many traders wait for a close beyond the level and a retest.

How it works

A level is a price where the market has turned many times before. Stop-losses and pending orders tend to cluster above resistance and below support. When price crosses the level, those orders trigger and can fuel the move.

A true breakout means price holds beyond the level: a candle closes past it, often on higher volume, and price stays there. A false breakout means price pokes through briefly, takes out stops and comes back inside. False breaks are very common.

So traders watch the candle close rather than a wick, and they watch volume. The careful approach is to wait for a retest: price coming back to the broken level, which now acts from the other side.

Example with numbers 1

BTC spends two weeks below resistance at $60,000. A daily candle closes at $61,200 on volume 1.5 times the average. Two days later price dips to $60,100 and bounces: that is the retest. Entry at $60,300, stop below the level at $59,400, risk $900 per 1 BTC.

Example with numbers 2

EUR/USD spikes through resistance at 1.1000 to 1.1015, but the hourly candle closes at 1.0990. That is a false breakout: anyone who bought the spike is now losing.

Common mistake

The main mistake is buying the instant price pokes through, on emotion, without a candle close and without a stop. False breakouts catch exactly those traders. Wait for a candle to close beyond the level on your timeframe, check volume, decide where the stop goes in advance (usually beyond the level) and size the position from your risk.

Questions and answers

What is a breakout in simple terms?

It is when price moves past a level where it used to turn around, for example rising above resistance.

How do I tell a false breakout from a real one?

Nothing guarantees it, but signs help: a candle close beyond the level, not just a wick, higher volume and price holding after a retest. If price quickly falls back, the break was probably false.

Where do I put the stop on a breakout trade?

Usually beyond the broken level or beyond the last swing low (for a long). If price goes deep back inside the level, the breakout idea is broken.
