CHoCH (change of character)
A change of character (CHoCH) is the first break of market structure against the current trend. It is an early signal that the trend may be reversing.
How it works
In an uptrend price makes higher lows. When it closes below the last higher low for the first time, that is a bearish CHoCH: buyers are no longer holding the structure. In a downtrend a CHoCH is the first close above the last lower high.
A CHoCH is a warning, not a finished reversal. Price often returns to the break zone afterwards. If a BOS then forms in the new direction, the reversal is treated as confirmed.
In Smart Money Concepts, traders often look for a CHoCH after a liquidity sweep: price pokes above an old high, triggers sellers' stops, then sharply breaks structure down. That combination is seen as more reliable than a CHoCH alone.
ETH is rising: higher low at $3,000, higher high at $3,250. Then price drops and a 4-hour candle closes at $2,960, below the last higher low. That is a bearish CHoCH. The trader closes longs or waits for a pullback to $3,050–$3,100 to look for a short with a stop above $3,250.
The mistake is flipping your position on the first CHoCH on a small timeframe while ignoring the higher trend. A 5-minute CHoCH inside a daily uptrend is often just a pullback. Check the higher timeframe and wait for a new BOS to confirm.
Questions and answers
What is a CHoCH in simple terms?
It is the first time price breaks structure against the trend. For example, in a rally it drops below the last higher low for the first time.
Does a CHoCH mean the trend has reversed?
Not necessarily. It is an early signal; a reversal is confirmed when a break of structure (BOS) forms in the new direction.
How do you pronounce CHoCH?
Most traders say 'chock' or spell out C-H-o-C-H. It is short for change of character.
