Taxable event

A taxable event is an action with an asset that can create a duty to pay tax: for example selling it, swapping it or receiving crypto as income.

How it works

Tax is not charged for holding crypto but for specific events. In many countries these include selling for fiat, swapping one coin for another and paying for goods or services with crypto. At that moment a gain or loss is locked in.

A separate group is receiving crypto as income: staking and mining rewards, airdrops, salary or payment for services in crypto. In many countries such income is taxed at its market value when received, and when you later sell, any further increase from that value is taxed too.

Usually not taxable: buying crypto with fiat, moving it between your own wallets and exchange accounts, and simply holding. But the lists differ by country, and complex DeFi actions (loans, liquidity pools, wrapped tokens) are treated in different ways. Check your local rules.

Example with numbers

In a year you did three things: bought 1,000 USDT for $1,000, moved it from your exchange account to your own wallet, and later swapped 500 USDT for ETH. In many countries only the swap is a taxable event, and since USDT stayed near $1, the gain on it is close to zero.

Common mistake

A common mistake is missing the quiet taxable events: coin-to-coin swaps, paying with crypto, staking rewards. Each one may need a record with the date and market value at that moment. Turn on history export on every platform you use and save it regularly.

Questions and answers

What is a taxable event in simple terms?

It is the moment an action with crypto creates a tax duty: usually selling, swapping, spending, or receiving crypto as income.

Is moving crypto between my own wallets a taxable event?

Usually not, because the owner does not change. Keep proof that both addresses are yours and note the network fee.

Are staking rewards taxable?

In many countries yes: they are treated as income at market value on the day you receive them. The approach depends on the country.
