Airdrop

An airdrop is a token handout: a project sends coins to the wallets of people who used its service, held a token or joined a list of participants.

How it works

Projects hand out tokens to get attention, reward early users and spread governance across the community. They usually take a snapshot: record which wallets met the conditions on a set date, then let them claim the tokens.

Only the name is free. You pay with time, attention and network fees for transactions. Many tokens drop after the handout because recipients sell right away. In some countries received tokens count as income and are taxed.

The real danger is fakes. Scammers clone handouts, send "free" tokens and links to fake sites so you sign a permission that drains your wallet.

Example with numbers 1

You have used a DeFi service for a while and it announces a handout for early users. Open the site only from a link in the official account of the project. If a link lands in your DMs from "support", treat it as a trap.

Example with numbers 2

You receive 500 tokens at $0.40, which is $200 on paper. Claiming costs you $3 in network fees. A week later recipients start selling, the price drops to $0.15 and your airdrop is worth $75.

Common mistake

Never type your seed phrase to "claim an airdrop" and do not approve unclear permissions in your wallet: a real handout asks for neither. If unknown tokens suddenly appear in your wallet, do not try to sell or "activate" them on a site named in the token, a common bait. Use a separate wallet with no large balance for airdrop hunting.

Questions and answers

What is an airdrop in simple terms?

It is when a project gives its tokens away for free to users who met certain conditions, such as using the service, holding a coin or signing up.

How do I claim an airdrop safely?

Use links only from the official channels of the project, never enter your seed phrase and read what you sign in your wallet. Keep a separate wallet for airdrops.

Why did random tokens appear in my wallet?

Most often it is a scam airdrop. Do not interact with them or visit a site named in the token, because it will ask you to sign a harmful permission.
