Tokenomics

Tokenomics is the economics of a token: how many coins exist, who gets them and when, how they unlock and what they are for. It is not a price forecast.

How it works

You look at a few things. Supply: how many coins are circulating now and the maximum there will ever be (max supply). Distribution: what share goes to the team, funds and community. Unlocks (vesting): when the locked tokens of investors and the team can be sold.

It also matters what the token is for: paying fees, voting, staking. If a token has no real use, demand rests only on expectations. Then there is inflation: if many new coins are issued every year, your share gets diluted.

Tokenomics shows who may sell and when. A good design does not guarantee growth, but a bad one (a huge team share, short vesting) is a common risk sign.

Example with numbers 1

The team holds 40% of the tokens and all of them unlock in a month. That means many sellers may show up. So check the unlock schedule in advance.

Example with numbers 2

Max supply is 1 billion tokens, 100 million are circulating, the price is 2 USD. Market cap is 100M × 2 = 200M USD, while the fully diluted valuation (FDV) is 1B × 2 = 2B USD. So 90% of the coins are still to come and may weigh on the price.

Common mistake

Beginners look only at the coin price and think a 0.01 USD token is "cheap". The price of one coin means nothing without the number of coins. Compare market cap with FDV, check the unlock schedule and the team's share. And do not take a pretty diagram in the docs as a guarantee: white paper promises can change.

Questions and answers

What is tokenomics in simple terms?

It is the set of rules a token lives by: how many exist, who gets them, when they can be sold and what they are used for.

What is a token unlock?

It is when previously locked tokens of the team or investors become available to sell. Large unlocks often add selling pressure.

What is the difference between circulating supply and max supply?

Circulating supply is how many coins are on the market now. Max supply is the most that will ever exist. The bigger the gap, the more new coins will reach the market.
