Exchange inflows and outflows

Exchange inflows and outflows are an on-chain metric showing how many coins move to and from exchange addresses. Traders use it as an indirect signal of intent to sell or to hold.

How it works

Inflow is coins arriving at exchange wallets. Outflow is coins leaving them. The difference is netflow. Analytics services tag known exchange addresses and total these amounts by day.

The logic is simple: to sell BTC on an exchange you usually send it there first. So heavy inflows sometimes come before selling pressure, while steady outflows suggest coins are moving into long-term storage. Stablecoins work the other way: stablecoin inflows to exchanges can mean buyers getting ready.

The metric is noisy. Exchanges shuffle coins between their own wallets, address labels can be wrong, and some coins are deposited as futures collateral rather than for sale. Watch the trend over weeks, not a single spike.

Example with numbers

In a day 25,000 BTC arrives at exchanges and 18,000 leaves. Net inflow is +7,000 BTC, about $420 million at $60,000. If that repeats several days in a row while price falls, it confirms selling pressure. If it is a one-off spike from one exchange address, it is probably an internal transfer.

Common mistake

A common mistake is opening a trade on one headline like "10,000 BTC just hit exchanges". Big inflows often turn out to be internal transfers or collateral for derivatives. Look at netflow over several days, compare it with price and volume, and never use the metric as your only signal.

Questions and answers

What do exchange inflows mean in simple terms?

They are coins people send to exchanges. Often they are sent to be sold, so large inflows are seen as bearish.

Are BTC outflows from exchanges bullish?

They are usually read as bullish because coins move into long-term storage. It is not a guarantee that price will rise.

Why are stablecoin inflows to exchanges seen as bullish?

Stablecoins on an exchange are money ready to buy crypto. They can also be used as margin for shorts, though.
