Whale
A whale is a market participant holding so many coins that their buying and selling can noticeably move the price. For example, an address with 1,000 BTC or more is often called a whale.
How it works
There is no exact cutoff: for bitcoin, addresses with 1,000 BTC or more are usually called whales, while for a small token a few percent of supply is enough. Whales include funds, early investors, project teams, exchanges and custodians holding client coins.
People watch whales because their big trades affect liquidity and sentiment. Sending a large amount to an exchange may mean preparing to sell, withdrawing may mean planning to hold. In a thin market one whale can pump or dump the price with a single trade.
But one address is not always one person. The biggest addresses often belong to exchanges, and their moves are internal housekeeping. Whales can also make visible moves on purpose to mislead the market and then do the opposite.
A token has 100 million coins in circulation and 5 addresses hold 40 million. If one sells 4 million coins into a pool with $500,000 of liquidity, the price can drop by tens of percent in minutes. For BTC that kind of concentration is practically impossible, so the market is far more stable.
A common mistake is blindly copying "whales" from social media alerts. You see a transfer but not who it is or why: an exchange, a hedge or a deliberate fake-out. Treat whale moves as a reason to look closer, and make decisions from your own plan with a stop-loss.
