Golden cross and death cross

A golden cross is when the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day one, and a death cross is when it crosses below. They are read as signs of a change in the long-term trend.

How it works

The usual setup is the 50 SMA and 200 SMA on the daily chart. When the short average climbs above the long one, the average price of the last two and a half months has moved above the 200-day average: momentum has turned bullish. A death cross shows the opposite.

The signal lags a lot. By the time the lines cross, price has often already made a large part of the move, and sometimes the cross comes right before a pullback. In a range the averages can cross several times in a row and give false signals.

These crosses are popular in the news, so many people react to them. Experienced traders use them more as background for a long-term view, whether the market is above its main averages, than as an entry point.

Example with numbers

BTC drops to $40,000, then turns and rallies. A few weeks later the 50 SMA rises to $46,000 and crosses the 200 SMA at $45,800: a golden cross. Price is already $52,000 at that point, so 30% of the move from the bottom happened before the signal.

Common mistake

The mistake is buying on a golden cross or selling everything on a death cross as if it were a precise signal. Because of the lag, entries tend to be late, and in crypto death crosses have often been followed by a bounce. Use the crosses to confirm the broader trend and make decisions based on levels and your risk plan.

Questions and answers

What is a golden cross in simple terms?

It is the moment the 50-day average price rises above the 200-day average. It is read as a sign the long-term trend has turned up.

What is a death cross?

It is the opposite crossover: the 50-day average drops below the 200-day one. It is seen as bearish, but it lags too.

Does the golden cross work in crypto?

Sometimes it has lined up with the start of a long rally, sometimes it was a false signal. As a standalone strategy it is weak because of the lag.
